Rule 67:16:29:01 Definitions.
67:16:29:01. Definitions. Terms used in this
chapter mean:
(1) "Augmentative
communication device," equipment used to overcome or ameliorate an
individual's inability to communicate due to a disease or medical condition;
(2) "Equipment,"
reusable equipment which is primarily medical in nature;
(3) "Maintenance,"
servicing performed at routine intervals based on hours of use or calendar days
to ensure that equipment is in working order;
(4) "Manual
wheelchair," a chair mounted on wheels that can be propelled and guided by
the occupant with or without assistance from another person. Travel chairs that
are available with a choice of either large or small self-propelling wheels are
included. Roll-away chairs, recliners on wheels, geriatric chairs, and similar
chairs are excluded from this definition;
(5) "Mechanical
ventilator" or "respirator," a positive pressure breathing
device which can maintain respiration automatically for prolonged periods of
time during the absence of spontaneous breathing. This does not include
continuous positive airway pressure machines;
(6) "Motorized
wheelchair," a chair mounted on wheels that is propelled by an electrical
power source, is capable of speeds no greater than six miles per hour, and is
controlled by the operator through a joystick or breath controller; and
(7) "Repair,"
parts and labor necessary to restore a piece of medical equipment to its
original working order, but not add-on equipment or enhancements;
(8) "Speech
pathologist," an individual who has a certificate of clinical competence
from the American Speech and Hearing association, has completed the equivalent
educational requirements and work experience necessary for a certificate of
clinical competence from the American Speech and Hearing Association, or has
completed the academic program and is acquiring supervised work experience to
qualify for the certification;
(9) "Speech
therapist," an individual who meets the requirements of § 24:02:03:22
and subdivision 24:05:16:02(4), has completed an approved program in speech and
hearing at a college or university, has experience and training in the area of
augmentative communication devices, and works under the direction and
supervision of a speech pathologist;
(10) "Stage
III pressure sore," loss of the full thickness of skin which may include
invasion of subcutaneous tissue and produces serosanguinesus drainage; and
(11) "Stage
IV pressure sore," loss of the full thickness of skin with invasion of
deeper tissue, muscle, joint, or bone.
